CUTAWAN VS OPUSCLIP

An Opus Clip alternative.
Built for your desktop.

Cutawan and OpusClip can both help turn long recordings into short, captioned videos. The biggest difference is how you work: Cutawan is an open-source desktop editor with a choice of AI connections or local-only captions, while OpusClip offers a managed browser workflow.

OpusClip plan details checked . Review its current terms before deciding.

Short answer: Cutawan is worth trying if you want local editing and MP4 export, no forced watermark and no subscription to the app. For AI clip finding, choose ChatGPT/Codex sign-in or a separately billed API. Whole-video captions can run with local Whisper and no AI service. OpusClip is worth considering if automatic publishing and a managed web workflow matter more.

Where Cutawan is stronger for a desktop workflow

Cutawan works with your source video on your computer. It finds suggested moments from a transcript, checks endings, offers speaker-aware reframing and burns styled captions into a locally rendered MP4. You can also caption a whole video without highlight discovery. There is no Cutawan subscription, app-imposed minute limit or mandatory watermark. You can inspect and change the MIT-licensed source code.

These advantages matter if you want an editable local project, direct control of exports and a tool you can keep using without a Cutawan subscription. AI clip finding still needs a connection: ChatGPT sign-in uses a signed-in Codex CLI and your plan's Codex allowance, while an OpenAI-compatible API is billed separately. Local-only captions do not find or score clips. Compare the setup requirements.

Where OpusClip may fit better

OpusClip's paid plans offer managed processing, automatic posting and features for teams. A browser workflow may be simpler if you do not want to install a desktop app or configure an AI connection. Cutawan does not currently share cloud projects or post directly to TikTok, Instagram or YouTube. Its rendering speed depends on your computer.

What happens to your footage?

In Cutawan, the full source video, editing, face tracking, rendering and export stay local. The API route can send extracted audio for transcription, and sends transcript text and sampled frames for analysis. ChatGPT/Codex keeps speech local but sends analysis data. Local-only whole-video captions need no AI service. Review both products' privacy terms if you work with confidential recordings.

Try both with the same recording

  1. Choose a video you own with a topic change and at least one complete answer.
  2. Compare how many suggested clips make sense without the full episode.
  3. Check names, timing and readability in the exported captions.
  4. Inspect the framing and audio in the final MP4, not only the preview.
  5. Compare the full cost and your own editing time at your expected monthly volume.

Cutawan's score helps you review candidates; it does not predict views. For a detailed walkthrough, see how to make clips from a long video. For more options, see Cutawan, OpusClip, Vizard and Klap compared.
